OPF XV Audition Announcement

APAC will be casting the four plays selected for the 15th annual Original Play Festival at auditions on Sunday July 6 at 2:30 p.m. and Monday July 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the Aloha Theatre. Approximately 30 actor/readers are sought for the festival. Rehearsals, beginning July 9, will be minimal (five per play) and memorization is not required, as the shows are presented as staged readings, with actors carrying scripts. OPF XV will be presented at the Aloha Theatre August 13-16 nightly at 7:30 p.m.

"Tear, Kiss, Cake," by Ka'u resident Dick Hershberger and directed by Arlene Araki, will be Wednesday night's offering. This dramatic comedy features a wedding photographer who dispenses wisdom about love and romance as he guides brides and grooms onto the path to marital bliss. Characters include George Witt, in his 60's; Millie Witt, George's daughter, 20's; Lisa Ben, a bride, 20's; Dameel Eaton, African American, 20's; Leilani Nohea, local female, 50's; Greg Dover, the groom, 20-30; Mary Potts, 50's; Helen Gall, 40's; Rachel Stone, a bride, 20's.

On Thursday, Denver playwright J. Jackson's drama "Other Tangible Things" will be presented, directed by Sam Valenti. The wide-ranging script is set in Denver and involves a death, a chance encounter, humility, and love. Characters include Daniel Moffett, Jr., a 59 year old lawyer; Adrian Rakow, an exotic gardener in his 30's; Wilma Hale and Valaria Singh, young legal professionals; Mary Catherine McCurdy, office worker; several masked doctors and nurses; and disembodied voices.

Friday's show is "Game Face," by Hilo playwright Zena Zeller, directed by Robin O'Hara. Characters available in this comic drama are: Madge, the mother of the Browning family, 40ish; George, the family lawyer, late 20's; Porgy, Madge's son, early 20's; Megan, Madge's irrepressible daughter, 18; Iseppe, an au pair with a heavy Borat-like accent, 18; Poppy, a ten year old girl; and Hardy, another lawyer, any age.

Saturday's show, the final of the festival, will be "The Picture Project" by Kailua, Oahu author Anthony Michael Oliver, directed by Ann Thompson Kern. The play centers around a widowed labor lawyer who is suddenly courted by her late husband's best friend. Characters are Catherine, Asian, 60's; Francine, Catherine's hapa granddaughter, 20's; Howard, Caucasian businessman, 60's; and Rob, Howard's protege, 26.

A potluck festival wrap party will be held at the theatre at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday August 17 to honor all the participants in OPF XV. Auditions for all four plays will be conducted simultaneously, and will consist primarily of reading from the scripts, which are available for onsite perusal at the APAC loft 10 a.m. til 5 p.m., or by arrangement with Sam or Jerry at 322-9924.
