APAC HOLDS AUDITIONS FOR "CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF"
Aloha Performing Arts Company is seeking 14 volunteer actors for the cast of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," the landmark American drama by Tennessee Williams. The play, which won the 1955 Pulitzer Prize for drama, takes place in the repressive 50's at the Mississippi delta plantation home of the Pollitt family, and contains adult language and situations. The dysfunctional family is gathered for the 65th birthday of their patriarch, "Big Daddy," who believes he has just been given a new lease on life. Director Jerry Tracy will hold auditions on two nights, Monday and Tuesday, February 25 and 26, at 6:30 p.m., at the APAC loft in Kainaliu, directly across the street from Lavender Moon Gallery, on the second floor of the old Ben Franklin building. Access is via a lane on the south side of the building and the entrance is above and behind the street level shops. Parking is scarce, so those auditioning are encouraged to park on the street or in the public lot just north of the building and then walk up. No experience is required and newcomers are welcome. Actors need only audition on one night, but are welcome to attend both evenings. Those under age 18 may only audition with parent or guardian permission. Permission forms and audition forms are available online at www.apachawaii.org.
Roles available are: Margaret ("Maggie the Cat"), the gorgeous young heroine, whose desperate loneliness has hardened her and made her nervous and catty; Brick, Maggie's husband and the favorite son, an alcoholic ex-football player who still embodies sleek masculinity; Mae ("Sister Woman"), a mean, agitated "monster of fertility" who schemes with her husband to secure the family estate; Gooper ("Brother Man"), Mae's husband, a successful corporate lawyer...the eldest and least favored son, ruthlessly plotting to secure control of the estate; Big Mama, Brick and Gooper's mother...age 60, earnest, crude, bedecked in flashy jewelry, embarrassingly dedicated to her cruel husband; Big Daddy, age 65, the father of Brick and Gooper, a large, brash, and vulgar millionaire who is about to die; Reverend Tooker, a tactless, opportunistic, and hypocritical guest; Doctor Baugh, Big Daddy's somber physician; Dixie and Trixie, annoying little girls, the children of Mae and Gooper; and Lacey and Sookey, plantation servants.
Those auditioning should arrive promptly to fill out forms and be photographed, and should be prepared to share a 1 to 2 minute story or monologue in a Southern accent. The rest of the audition will consist of readings from the script. A limited number of scripts are available for onsite perusal or checkout for a $10 deposit, Monday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. til 5:00 p.m. "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" will be performed at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu, April 25 through May 10. Rehearsals will begin March 3, and will be held four week nights and one weekend afternoon per week, approximately 3 hours per session. Not all cast members will be required at all rehearsals; frequency of rehearsals and specific time commitment varies with each role. For more information, call the APAC office at 322-9924.
