The Aloha Performing Arts Company (APAC) will hold auditions for its upcoming production of playwright Robert Harling’s award winning comedy “Steel Magnolias” on February 20 and 21st. Director Sue Boyum will begin auditions promptly at 6:30pm at the APAC loft.
“Steel Magnolias” is set in Truvy’s Beauty Shop in the 1980’s and is the story of six Southern women who share their personal triumphs, tragedies, beauty tips, recipes and scandalous gossip! The center of the group is a bride with problems and her mother who looks to her friends for strength and laughter as she battles her deepest fears concerning her daughter. It has wonderful, strong parts for six talented actresses.
The characters are:
Truvy: Age 35 plus. Truvy owns the Beauty Shop, a converted garage alongside her house in Chinquapin, Louisiana. Anyone who is “anybody” has her hair done at “Truvy’s”. She's vivacious, outgoing, caring and has a great sense of humor. Ideally, she would be portrayed by someone who knows how to “do” hair.
M’Lynn: Mid 40’s plus. M’Lynn is the mother of the bride who loves her daughter dearly and wants only the best for her, especially where her health is concerned. She is a strong, stubborn and caring woman.
Ouiser: 50 plus. Ouiser is grumpy, meddling and opinionated, although a bit of a “softy” underneath - a fantastic character role.
Clairee: 50 plus. She's a political, ambitious and wealthy socialite. She's also friendly and kind with a terrific sense of humor.
Annelle: Early to mid 20’s. Annelle works for Truvy and, at first, is shy and withdrawn, then becomes more outgoing and then religious. Actresses playing this role would ideally have the ability “to do good hair”.
Shelby: Early to mid 20’s. Shelby's pretty, outgoing, friendly and loves life. She's desperately in love and desperate to have a child.
“Steel Magnolias” will be performed Friday through Sunday from April 14-30 (no performance on Easter Sunday).
