The "delightful, delicious, de-lovely" music of Cole Porter will soon be wafting through the rafters of the Aloha Theatre. Aloha Performing Arts Company will be holding auditions for approximately 30 volunteer singer/actor/dancers for its upcoming production of the musical comedy "Anything Goes" on Monday and Tuesday, December 28 and 29, at 6:30 p.m. at the theatre. Performance dates for this Broadway classic are February 19 through March 13, 2010.

Roles available include:

  • Reno Sweeney, alto, a sexy evangelist turned nightclub singer;
  • Hope Harcourt, alto or soprano, a beautiful debutante;
  • Evangeline Harcourt, alto or soprano, Hope's widowed mother;
  • Lord Evelyn Oakleigh, baritone, a wealthy Englishman;
  • Elisha Whitney, baritone, a pompous Wall Street broker;
  • Billy Crocker, tenor, Whitney's young assistant;
  • Moonface Martin, tenor, a fugitive gangster;
  • Erma, alto, a funny, sexy gangster's moll;
  • Ship Captain, baritone;
  • Luke and John, two comic Chinese religious converts.
  • In addition, the production calls for a female quartet called "the Angels," a male quartet of sailors, a bartender, a minister, two FBI agents, reporters, photographers, and an ensemble of various sailors, crew, and passengers.

Notes:

  • All roles are open. No performing experience is required, and newcomers are encouraged to audition.
  • Those auditioning should dress comfortably and wear closed shoes.
  • Auditions will consist of learning a short dance routine, and reading and singing predetermined selections from the show.
  • Prepared audition pieces are not necessary.
  • Attendance at one of the audition nights is sufficient; if necessary, there will be a final callback audition by invitation on Wednesday, December 30.

Rehearsals will be conducted Sundays 4-8 p.m. and Monday through Thursday evenings, 6:30 to 9:30 pm. beginning January 3. Performances will be Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons, from February 19 through March 13. Participants must commit to the entire rehearsal and performance schedule.

"Anything Goes" is set mostly aboard the "S.S. American," a luxury liner sailing from New York to London, and involves two seasoned Broadway performers who both choose a different leading lady for their next joint project. Music and lyrics are by Cole Porter, with original book by Guy Bolton, P.G. Wodehouse, Howard Lindsay, and Russel Crouse. APAC is doing the recently revised Beaumont Theatre version, with new book by Timothy Crouse and John Weidman. In addition to the title song, other well known tunes in the show include "I Get a Kick Out Of You," "Easy to Love," "It's De-Lovely," and "Blow, Gabriel, Blow."
