One Winter Story: The inspiring journey of a big-wave pioneer and scientist, Sarah Gerhardt. Sarah became a star in the surfing universe in 1998 as the first woman to slice across a monster wave at Northern California’s legendary Maverick’s. Media coverage and adulation followed, but Sarah’s dramatic journey from poverty and despair to accomplishment and peace went unnoticed. One Winter Story traces Sarah’s faith and determination to their roots in a beautiful montage of film, voice, memory and emotion. The surfing footage is and awesome sight but the fine, intensely immediate rendering of Sarah’s experience is this unforgettable films real reward. We are honored to have filmmaker, Sally Lundburg, joining us for the Big Island screening of this film.

The Pursuit: A surf movie that reflects the lives of a new generation of surfers. Each athlete has their own story to tell inside the broader story of “THE PURSUIT.” With an introduction by Kelly Slater, each athlete tells their own story without the broader story of “The Pursuit. Starring local Kona Boy, Torrey Meister, Brett Simpson, Jordy Smith, Ricky Basnett, Pat Gudauskas, Dusty Payne, and more as they pursue the next wave, the next level, and the life that is surfing. Torrey is going to join us for the Big Island debut of this film. Cheers to another Kona Surfer making wave in the world of professional surfing.

Between the Lines: This film explores the Vietnam War through the prism of the surfing sub-culture. The film offers unique insight into the dramatic effects that the Vietnam War and draft had on young American men who rode waves. It explores the choice that most draft age surfers faced during the Vietnam War era: either go to war or evade the draft. It was one of the other. Between the Lines delves into the lives of two surfers who choose opposite paths. Pat Farley and Brant Page. While following the lives of these two surfers the film chronicles the impact of the Vietnam War on the surfing lifestyle. From the peaceful shores of Hawaii to the canopy jungles of Vietnam. It excavates the surfing cultures response to an extraordinary circumstance. We are honored to have filmmaker, Troy Page, and his father who stars in the film, Brant Page, join us for the Big Island Debut of this film.

Roots Reef Radicals: Film of local Big Island body boarders getting their groove on in some of our favorite home town breaks.

Slicking Liberia: This film follows four young surfers to Liberia in search of more than perfect waves. Risking everything to explore the Western African country devastated by decades of war, they record the stories of people they meet- people like Alfred, who became Liberia’s first surfer after finding a bodyboard while fleeing from rebels. Besides rediscovering a break that could be the best kept secret in the surfing world, they find something more important- a way to travel responsibly in the 21st century.

Out There: Teton Gravity Research (TGR) presents OUT THERE, a film taking a progressive, fresh look at what faces the surf world today. Humankind threatens many pristine and favorite surf breaks and surfers need to take action. In partnership with the Surfrider Foundation, TGR’s OUT THERE takes viewers to a variety of breaks around the world, showcasing the cutting edge surfing of today. Through the eyes and experiences of surfers and locals, the film takes a thought-provoking look into the environmental destruction threatening key surf spots such as Trestles in Southern California, surf in Southern Chile threatened by pulp mills, Teahupoo and its growing popularity, mainland Mexico, North Shore Hawaii near the Turtle Bay development and beyond.
