Aloha Performing Arts Company begins its 22nd production season with the 15th annual Original Play Festival, which will feature four new, unproduced plays in four days, August 13 through 16, at APAC's home, the historic Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu. All plays are offered as staged readings, with actors holding scripts, and with minimal technical presentation. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. All plays contain adult subject matter and mild profanity, so parental guidance is suggested.

On Wednesday, August 13, local playwright Dick Hershberger's play "Tear, Kiss, Cake" will be presented, directed by Arlene Araki. This romanatic comedy involves a wedding photographer, his overprotective daughter, and a series of classic misunderstandings endured by charmingly wacky characters. The cast includes Bob Haber, Becca Beaver, Madeline Heeley, Lee Vinson, Atlee Riddle, Rexanne Ring, Sue Boyum, Jaquelynn Collier, and Shawn Nakoa.

Aloha Performing Arts Company, the only live theatre company on the Kona coast, invites the public to support its work at a gala benefit entitled "100 Years of Broadway" on Saturday evening, August 2 at APAC's home, the historic Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu. The event begins at 6:30 p.m., and will feature an elegant gourmet selection of heavy pupu and fine wines and local and imported beers inside the theatre. A highlight of the evening will be live performances celebrating 100 years of Broadway. Featured composers include Rodgers and Hammerstein, Irving Berlin, Stephen Sondheim, Kander and Ebb, Frank Loesser, Jerry Herman, Lerner and Loewe, Meredith Wilson, and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Performers include Delaney Ross, Sue Boyum, Sam Valenti, Randy Ressler, Miguel Montez, Noah and Elana Salzman, Elliott Jacobson, Amanda Ross, Sandra Burck, Jaquelynn Collier, BriAnna Johnson, Francine Alexander, and Kelly Ann Miles, with Jerry Tracy as the narrator. The evening will include a silent auction as well as a live auction, with Mark Pollard serving as auctioneer.

"Seussical Junior" will be performed two weekends at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu, June 20-29. Rehearsals will begin May 5, and will be held Mon, Tues, Thur and Fri evenings and Saturday afternoons. A tentative rehearsal schedule will be posted at auditions and those auditioning will be asked to list any rehearsal conflicts so please bring your calendars. Aloha Performing Arts Company will be holding auditions for approximately 30 actor/readers for its 15th annual Original Play Festival on Sunday July 6 at 2:30 p.m. and Monday July 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu. The festival will be presented at the theatre August 13 through 16. Actor/readers will not be required to memorize lines, as the festival features new, unproduced theatrical works in staged reading format, with actors carrying scripts. Each play will rehearse once a week for five weeks and will be performed only once, so the rehearsal and performance commitment is minimal compared to mainstage shows.

Robin O'Hara has been cast as Maggie the Cat in Tennessee Williams' sultry Southern drama "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," the next production of Aloha Performing Arts Company. Robin was last seen as Belinda in "Noises Off" and is a member of the APAC Board of Directors. Maggie's crippled husband, Brick, will be played by Caesar Goosen, an APAC newcomer, and Big Daddy, the role created by Burl Ives, is portrayed by Brian Berry, whose last role for APAC was Norman in "On Golden Pond." Big Mama will be portrayed by Eileen Weiner, fresh from appearing as Sylvia Potter-Porter in "Annie Get Your Gun." Gooper and Mae, also known as Brother Man and Sister Woman, are played by Mark Bernstein and Cathy Riehle. Other cast members include Eugene Gall as Dr. Baugh, Terry Westerman as Reverend Tooker, Lilly Hoskinson-Weinstein as Dixie, Ivy Learned as Trixie, Lee Vinson as Lacey, and Becca Beaver, another APAC newcomer, as Sookey. Jerry Tracy is directing, assisted by Paula Cornwell. Producers are Sam Valenti and Randy Ressler, and designers include Steve Reynolds, set; Mark Bernstein, lighting; Paula Cornwell, props, and Lee Vinson, hair, makeup, and costumes.

SCRIPTS SOUGHT FOR 15TH ANNUAL ORIGINAL PLAY FESTIVAL

Aloha Performing Arts Company has announced its request for new, unpublished scripts for its 15th annual Original Play Festival, which will be presented August 13 through 17, 2008 at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu. Scripts of any length and on any subject will be accepted through postmark date May 23, 2008.

Entries must be typewritten, bound, with sequentially numbered pages. Each script must be accompanied by a list of characters and a brief description of the play. Three copies of each script, including character list and description, are required, to expedite the selection committee's evaluation process. SCRIPTS SHOULD NOT CONTAIN THE PLAYWRIGHT'S NAME. One separate cover sheet with the play's title and the playwright's name, address, phone numbers, and email address must be included, unattached to the bound scripts, to insure anonymity in evaluation and selection. Musical entries must be accompanied by three performance quality cassette tapes or CDs with voice tracks.

Casting is complete and rehearsal has begun for the holiday classic "A Christmas Carol," the next production by the Aloha Performing Arts Company's Aloha Teen Theatre. "A Christmas Carol," adapted by Christopher Schario from the book by Charles Dickens, is a timeless tale and a delight for family audiences. ATT's production of "A Christmas Carol" has a cast of 15 members, and is directed by Sandra Burck and produced by Erica and Gayle Keller.
